Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media also a speaker who is Canadian. Feminist Frequency is a web site which hosts video and commentary on the representation of gender roles in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are represented in the popular media. The challenge of destroying stereotypes regarding women is her main focus. But, she also discusses issues of targeted harassment against women online as well as other communities who have been excluded. Sarkeesian has a degree in social thought and politics from York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public speaker. Sarkeesian gave speeches to the TEDxWomen XOXO Fest and United Nations Broadband Working Group. At a young age Sarkeesian was captivated by the issue of gender identity as well as feminist ideas. As a student, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency Website. She had a plan to launch an internet program that would examine the role of gender in games but was the target of an online harassment campaign. However the attack could have been a hindrance, rather it was a boost to her determination as a feminist media critic. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feminism, she is awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winning media journalist. She also serves as the creator and director of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit group that focuses on pop-culture depictions of women.
