Julia Fiona Roberts is the daughter of Betty Lou Bredemus, and Walter Grady Roberts. She was born on 28 October 1967 in Atlanta. Her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer, was the first Roberts to settle in Atlanta. Her father took keen interest from a young age in stage. When he was a college pupil studying at Emory University from 1952 to 1954, he participated in numerous productions. In 1953, he joined the Air Force and while stationed in Biloxi in Mississippi, he acted in a production with Betty Lou Bredemus. The couple got married in 2005 and welcomed their first child, Eric Anthony in 1956. In 1957, the couple quit the military and Walter was enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter started working at Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio in 1960. Walter and Betty Lou started production in 1964 for the local Saturday morning children's television program Bum Bum and His Buddies that they self-funded. They founded an Actors and Writers Workshop in that same year. It ran for six years. In 1965, they welcomed two more children into their lives: Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
